Re:  West Virginia Sustainable Fair 2008 Committee Announces April Event

From:  Dale Hawkins, Public Relations Committee Chair (304) 269-8831 or (304) 269-7400 (Kitchen) Myra Bonhage-Hale, Co-Director (304) 269-7681

For Immediate Release:  January 22, 2008

The West Virginia Sustainable Fair 2008:  “Green Makes $en$e” will be held at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins West Virginia on April 18, 19, and 20.  The Planning Committee for the Fair has been meeting since December of 2006 in order to bring you the most comprehensive, informative, entertaining, and enlightening Fair possible.  Fair Coordinators, Denise Poole and Myra Bonhage-Hale say, “We are committed to inspire and empower you.  We have planned learning experiences for men, women, students and children to become environmentally savvy and save money!  That’s why the subtitle of our Fair is Green Makes $en$e!”

Dale Hawkins, the Executive Chef of Stonewall Resort and chair of the Public Relations committee, adds “We look forward to presenting wonderful signature dishes at the Friday welcoming event at Halliehurst Mansion titled “A Taste of West Virginia” featuring local food from local chefs.”

Following that, Public Outcry will perform at Harper-McNeely Auditorium.  Dale adds, “Topping off Saturday’s fun-filled, idea-laden day will be ‘Living in Concert:  A Sustainable Feast’ at Halliehurst Mansion, catered by local chefs and featuring mouth watering delights.”

On Saturday over 50 Booths will feature alternative energy, recycling techniques, green businesses, environmental issues, crafts and much more.  Saturday is the big day with over fourteen presentations on a variety of issues: solar, wind, recycled oil energy alternatives, green building, green business, slow food, EZ bites: PBS Kids, the Collaborative for the 21st Century, sustainable tourism, an Environmentally Friendly Art Show in the library (for the month of April and lasting thru the summer!), hybrid cars, and a children’s program both morning and afternoon.  Keynote Speaker Deborah Koons Garcia will present “Food and Integrity” based on her award winning documentary film, the Future of Food.

Booths will remain up until the first intermission of the WV Symphony taking place at 7:30 p.m. the Harper-McNeely Auditorium.

On Sunday, after a ceremony in the Robbins Chapel, participants will receive a list of “Visits to the Green Life” – a selection of businesses and homes which are using environmentally friendly practices such as straw bale housing and solar heating.  They may visit one or more of these green sites on their journey home.
The price for the Fair is $5.00—this fee purchases a bracelet for admission to all workshops, “Visits to the Green Life”, and the Keynote by Deborah Koons Garcia as well as all the other events!

Reservations for the Friday evening “A Taste of W.V.” ($25./person) and Saturday evenings “Sustainable Feast and the Symphony Orchestra” ($50.)  may be obtained by sending a check or money order to c/o Jan Myers, Sustainable Living for West Virginia, at 295 Simpson Run Rd., Weston, W.V. 26452.  For Sustainable Feast only, send $40.  For concert only ($10.), contact Carol Schuler, P.R. Re:  Deborah Koons Garcia to be Keynote Speaker at W.V. Sustainable Fair 2008
Date:  For Immediate Release:  February 1, 2008

The Sustainable Fair 2008 Planning Committee is proud to announce that Deborah Koons Garcia will be the keynote speaker at this year’s event at Davis and Elkins campus on Saturday, April 19th.  Her topic is “Food and Integrity”, based on her award winning documentary film, “The Future of Food”.  Her film will also be available for viewing in the Video Room.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, filmmaker Deborah Koons Garcia was inspired to produce this film as a result of a highly formative experience which occurred at age fifteen when she won first place at the Cincinnati Engineering Society Science Fair for her foray into the world of plant manipulation with her experiment, “Polyploidy in Plants.”  Her experiment with one set of seeds treated with chemicals or radiation resulted in large, thick and deformed plants and the other untreated seed resulted in  healthy plants.  She reflected,  “This is weird, I am going to keep up with what goes on in genetics, because if I can do this in my bedroom, what will scientists do in the future?  What will happen to people who eat this kind of food?”

The Future of Food examines alarming issues surrounding the rapidly increasing corporate domination of our food supply.  It is the first major film to cover the history and technology of genetic engineering and the complex implications of untested genetically engineered crops on the environment and unlabeled foods on consumers.  Garcia’s other film credits include All About Babies, Poco Loco, and Grateful Dawg, a documentary featuring her late husband, Jerry Garcia.

Garcia realized film would be an excellent way to inform people about these complex issues.  She is most proud of the film because it has inspired citizens all over the world.  She states, “This film is not only watched, it is used.  It motivates people to take action even if it’s just voting with their fork.  The Future of Food has already helped influence policy.  It’s exciting to think that this film could have a role in creating a healthier future for everyone. “  The Telluride Daily Planet, reports, “This stylish film is not just for food faddists and nutritionists.  It is a look at something we might not want to see:  Monsanto, RoundUp and RoundUp resistant seed collectively wreaking havoc on American farmers and our agricultural neighbors around the world.  In the end, this documentary is an eloquent call to action.”

Both gourmet dinners at the Fair, under the supervision of Dale Hawkins, Executive Chef, Stonewall Resort, feature local chefs using local food grown organically when available.  Reservations for the Friday evening “A Taste of W.V.” ($25./person) and Saturday evenings “Sustainable Feast” $40./person)  may be obtained by sending a check or money order to Sustainable Living for West Virginia c/o Jan Myers, Treasurer,  at 295 Simpson Run Rd., Weston, W.V. 26452.  For WV Symphony Orchestra Concert reservations (Sat. evening, the 19th of April, $10./person) contact Carol Schuler, P.R. Director at:  schulerc@davisandelkins.edu or at 304-637-1338.

Up to date information can be found at http://www.lapaixherbfarmproducts.com/SustainableLivingforWestVirginia.htm.

If interested in having a booth at the Fair, email Denise Poole, Booth Chair, at deniseap@earthlink.net or call her at (304) 617-7073.

The price for the Fair, which runs from Friday, April 18th through the 20th,  is $5./person—this fee purchases a bracelet for admission to all workshops, “Visits to the Green Life”, and the Keynote by Deborah Koons Garcia as well as the Environmentally Friendly Art Exhibit, the Video Room, and the Children’s Program.  Friday night’s Public Outcry band performance is free.

The West Virginia Sustainable Fair 2008:  “Green Makes $en$e” will be held at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins West Virginia on April 18, 19, and 20.

Among the many activities featured will be a Children’s Program and the Sustainable Art Exhibit: “Sustenance for the Soul”

Jane Birdsong, the chair of the Children’s Program, asks:  “Why start with the youngsters?  Because most children like nature and are curious explorers of it.  There are so many things to discover crawling in and growing out of the soil.  Children’s activities at the Sustainable Fair will include both indoor and outdoor activities, relating to biodiversity of species, biomes, clean vs. polluted water, the importance of recycling and how to get your parents to cooperate, ecology songs, art from nature, and wild edibles & medicinal plants.”

The Morning Session is from 9 – 12, and the Afternoon Session is from  12:30 – 3:30.  Jane adds, “Parents must feed their children lunch, but can then bring them back for more activities in the afternoon. It will be interesting to see who learns more at the Sustainable Fair – the kids or their parents!  Hopefully, they’ll each have new things to teach one another!”

The Sustainable Art Exhibit at the Fair is subtitled:  Sustenance for the Soul.    Jane Birdsong Coordinator of the Randolph Arts Alliance
Community Arts Calendar is also chairing this committee.  She states, “Our committee has received several entries already and we are jurying these on March 8th.  The show will be at the Davis & Elkins College Library from April 4 – August 22nd showing artists from several Appalachian states in painting, fiber arts, sculpture, pottery, and photography who have been inspired by a love of nature, or a use of recycled materials.  Their themes may be broad but generally center on living sensibly and responsibly with respect for their environment.”

The price for the Fair is $5.00—this fee purchases a bracelet for admission to all workshops, “Visits to the Green Life”, and the Keynote by Deborah Koons Garcia as well as all the other events!  Students with i.d. are free.

The W.V. Sustainable Fair is for everyone, young or old, student or professor, those already practicing environmentally friendly ways and those who want-to-be-green, and that includes all those who want to find out how Green can make $en$e.

For Immediate Release March 31st, 2008

The West Virginia Sustainable Fair 2008:  “Green Makes $en$e” will be held at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia on April 18th, 19th, and 20th.

Saturday, April 19th is a full day of workshops, presentations, a keynote address by Deborah Koons Garcia on “Food and Integrity” from her award winning documentary, demonstrations, an Art Exhibit, over sixty booths and a children’s program.  Fourteen workshops will be held with subjects ranging from Recycling Vegetable Oil for home and car to a discussion of wind power in West Virginia.  The workshops are scheduled in four tracts:  Food and Farm, Green Makes $en$e (building, tourism, recycling, business), Alternative Energy, and Policy.  Details of the presentations may be found on the website at http://www.lapaixherbfarmproducts.com/SustainableLivingforWestVirginia.htm

The Food and Farm track includes the 21st Century Collaborative, Goat Farming in W.V. with Rachel Moran, EZ Bites for Kids and Slow Food USA presented by the “Crazy Baker” Hall Hitzig.

The Green Makes $en$e track will feature Recycling with Jane Birdsong and Dr. David Ahrend.  Dr. Ahrend will present heating your home with bio fuels and will demonstrate his Mercedes Benz car which runs on recycled vegetable oil.  Scott Weaner of Roaring Thunder Vegetable Preserve will talk about his Green Business, a successful one in which he grows organic produce and herbs for high end local restaurants.  Scott states:  “I operate a small farm business growing vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruits and eggs in Tucker County WV.  We started our farm in 1976, but I did not begin this business until 1992.  I began gardening in 1971, and have used organic techniques since that time.  We were certified as an organic farm in the past, but gave up certification when the National Standards were passed and the cost exceeded our budget.  We continue operating using the same techniques, but gave up the expensive paperwork.  We encourage farm tours from friends, neighbors and customers.”

On the agenda with Scott is Mike Davis, whose business “Water Gap Retreat” emphasis environmentally friendly housing for tourists and small groups.  His unique buildings will be shown.  The Green Building Panel will feature Architect Thom Worlledge, the first LEED certified professional in West Virginia.  On the panel with him is Don Spencer, Morgantown City Councilman who convinced the Council to build the new fire station there as a LEED certified building.  Rounding out this track will be Brent Bailey, Executive Director of the Mountain Institute who will urge more state support for Eco-Tourism.  Doug Arbogast of Travel Green West Virginia will discuss his new green business in tourism.

The Energy Track will present Rick Webb, an expert on the pros and cons of Wind Energy, West Virginia Solar with Dan Bowes, Mountain View Solar Builders, the W.V. Environmental Council Green Entrepreneur of the year, and Ken Auvil on Saving Energy in Your New Home.

The Policy Track, two presentations sponsored by the West Virginia Environmental Council,  will feature Vicki Wolfe who will present A Citizen’s Energy Plan and Don Garvin.

The price for the Fair is $5.00—this fee purchases admission to all workshops, “Visits to the Green Life”, and the Keynote by Deborah Koons Garcia as well as all the other events!  Students with i.d. have free admission.
