Hydrosols are a by-product of essential oil distillation.  They hold within them the entire plant life at the time of harvest. Hydrosols are much kinder to older and younger skins and to the purse - as they are much less expensive than essential oils.  .  Lavender is only one of the hydrosols distilled at La Paix Herb Farm.  Choose from Lavender Peppermint, Sweet Marjoram, Rose Scented Geranium, Lavender & Roses, Oregano (the herb of the year)  or lemon balm.

Lavender & Roses Hydrosol  Combines lavender and Rose Geranium hydrosols for a blend of both a lovely aroma and healing skin tonic.

Hydrosols have a multitude of uses: spritzing, hygiene, travel,  laundry, fine dining, beauty and skin care.  We recommend that hydrosols be refrigerated for continued freshness.  Beauty and Skin Care:  Spritz on fingernails to encourage healthy growth of nails, on face to set makeup (or with lavender to clean make up from face), as an after shave, spritz on hair and scrunch to refresh and scent hairdo, add a cup to bathwater.  Spritz Yourself:  Cool a hot flash, soothe a sunburn, soothe a pet's hot spots, clean the air, freshen the bathroom, keep in the entryway to freshen the air before guests arrive.  Hygiene:  Disinfect your hands, make your own wet wipes - for you, your pets, your baby.  Keep in the car for dirty faces, hands and baby's bottom.  Use for a healing sitz bath.  Travel:  Refresh the air during travel in car, hotel room, airplane.  Cleanse that recycled air!  Hydrosols act as air-borne viricides.  I spritz lavender hydrosol whenever I go to the market - on the carrier handles, if someone sneezes or coughs (this is a bad flu season!)

The owner of Granny's Place in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, writes upon her third order in six months: "Can't say enough about the Passionate Gardener's Hand Cream.  It heals my daughter-in-law's hands and feet (eczema) and my son's hands (he works with cement and is a stone mason). Keeps my husband and I from cracked fingers and I use it on my 65 year old face for wrinkles. And it smells great.  Wonderful product."

A floral sweet scent with an added strong honey overtone.  Recommended for external application only.  Dilute with l/2 distilled water for children under six years of age.  The pH is normally close to that of most "balanced" cosmetic products, making it ideal for every skin type on a regular basis.  Here are a few of its many uses:

1.  Regenerative effects on damaged or fragile skin.
2.  Make up remover and cleanser, applied with a cotton ball.
3.  Mist the face and neck throughout the day to combat excessively dry atmospheres.
4.  Spray skin both before and after shaving or hair removal to reduce inflammation.
5.  Use it on the plane, all over the body, including feet and legs.
6.  Calms sunburn, heat rash, sunstroke, rashes, bug bites and itching.
7.  Natural for children:  Use to cleanse cuts and scrapes; A lavender kiss really "makes it better".
8.  Use to calm cranky moods; bring an end to tearful tantrums, add to bathwater it spray it directly on the bed for a restful night's sleep.
9.  Little girls love to have their own perfume, and this one won't cause allergies or skin reactions.
10.  Use with babies from birth, adding to bath, use to clean baby's bottom.  Refreshing room spray for home or office.

Another herbalist told me, "Myra, that's a wonderful product.  It really makes my lips smooth - but there's something wrong with it - it lasts too long - you can't be making much money on it!

Lavender is an oil with good antiseptic/ bactericidal and anti-inflammatory properties.  Useful for minor cuts, burns, bites and stings (researched and documented in France.).  Perhaps of the greatest value is its pronounced regulating effect on the nervous system.  Recommended for shortness of breath, depression, nervous exhaustion as well as hysteria.  Used for treating both anxiety and depression or a combination of the two.  (Catty, Hydrosols).  For fragrance or healing, just dab a little on your wrists, neck or arms.

Patchouli Scent: Earthy, smoky, spicy and musky scent.  Indicated for all aspects of the skin.  One of the most important and valuable raw materials of the perfume trade. Great in skin care as it regulates cellular tissue.  Inhaled, the scent of Patchouli is a nerve sedative and antidepressant and for some, an aphrodisiac. Externally it rejuvenates, invigorates and restores skin.

Rose Geranium Hydrosol from La Paix Herb Farm

Pelargonium graveolens hydrosol has a green, floral, sweet and dry odor.   It is a mild antibacterial, mild antifungal, very good tonic astringent for the skin, hemostatic and mild pancreas stimulant.  Inhaled as a relaxant and anti-inflammatory.  Indicated for all conditions of the woman's reproductive system as an inhalant and massage application.  Indicated as well for all problems of the nervous system such as anxiety, agitation, and nervous fatigue.  (from Rose, Jeanne 375 Essential Oils & Hydrosols.  Frog LTD, Berkeley California, 1999.)

Peppermint Hydrosol

Mentha x piperita hydrosol has a minty, hot, but very herbaceous, vegetative back note.  It is cooling; viricide; tonic; and stimulant, particularly to heart, brain, and pancreas; nerve tonic; somewhat anesthetic; a little decongesting for the prostate; and hormonelike to regulate ovarian hormones.  Indicated for:  Insufficient liver or pancreas juices, flatulence, belching, headache, migraine, nerve pain such as sciatica and eczema.  Uses:  Very good to disinfect air for seriously ill patients with AIDS, senility, or those with high fever.  Contraindications:  Not to be used on infants or excessively used.  Do not get near eyes! (from Rose, Jeanne, op. cit.)  Editor's Note:  Peppermint hydrosol is also useful to calm bug and bee bites, for hot weather and hot flashes.  Just spray a little around neck and pulse points for cooling effect!  Can be used when driving to keep alert.

Lemon Balm Hydrosol

According to Suzanne Catty, author of Hydrosols, the Next Aromatherapy,  "Melissa is calming to the body more than the mind but without being overly sedative.  Use it for stress, anxiety and childhood hysterics (ed.  "Many women buy it for their husbands!").

It has shown some positive results for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).  For children with ADHD, use thirty milliliters in one liter of water; consume throughout the day.  For adults, double the quantity of hydrosol:  sixty milliliters in one liter of water.

During pregnancy, lemon balm can be used to treat morning sickness, digestive upsets and water retention and as a system tonic for general well-being.

Melissa is gentle enough for use on babies; try adding a teaspoon to a night time bath.

Taken internally in the three-week protocol, lemon balm makes a good prophylactic in flu and allergy season and has both immune-stimulating and some infection-fighting properties.  People who are very hypotensive should avoid the three-week protocol, as it has further lowered already low blood pressure in some clients.

Lemon balm is a gentle cholagogue and has been used in digestive drinks for centuries; the hydrosol certainly aids digestion.

Editor's Note:  I had a rare case of poison oak on my hand this spring (from excessive weeding, no doubt!)  I used my usual remedy - jewelweed crushed and rubbed on the area - but it didn't do the job it usually does.  So I tried lemon balm hydrosol spritzed on the infected area and it dried up the postules in a day or two!

While speaking at a Garden Club gathering, I was told that the hostess's cat wouldn't touch catnip.  I told her about my organically grown, naturally dried catnip and said I would mail her some.  The day after mailing, the hostess called and said, "The mailman put the envelope of catnip in the front door mail slot and by the time I got home, the catnip was scattered all around and my cat was very happy."

These pots are hand painted and hardened in the oven by a special process.  Pots are 12 inches in circumference.  Sunflowers or Lavender (may vary) Please specify.
