A Workshop and Gourmet Luncheon:
Razzle Dazzle Basil
at La Paix
Saturday, May 26th, 2007
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For those who would like a
more private, personal time at La Paix before the Lavender Fair
- this may be what you were looking for!
The morning workshop will begin with herbal tea in the shop and
then an overview of culinary herbs growing at La Paix will be
conducted with a walk and a talk by steward, Myra Bonhage-Hale.
A booklet of culinary, medicinal and fragrant herbs, their
propagation, cultivation and uses will be given to
participants. Then back to the kitchen to see popular Chef
Geoff Kraus's demonstration.
Next, the gourmet luncheon (see column on right) will take place
in the historic parlor at La Paix or plein air (under the
umbrellas dotting the lawn) if the weather permits.
After lunch a walk in the Feng Shui, Fragrant and Vegetable
Garden will be conducted with an emphasis on medicinal and
fragrant herbs. Various plants including basil and
cuttings of Rosemary, lavender and thyme will be given each
guest. A hands on demonstration of making pesto will
have the group back in the kitchen and the day will end with a
walk in the Silver Labyrinth.

A Workshop and Gourmet Luncheon:
Heritage Herbs at La Paix
Saturday, October 14th: In
Celebration of the First National Herb Day, La Paix Herb Farm
will conduct a tour of the National Historic Landmark homestead
(aka May/Kraus Farm). A gourmet luncheon will be catered and
demonstrated by Chef Geof Kraus. The menu will focus on
the use of herbs in cooking. The workshop following the
luncheon will discuss the herbs used in the luncheon, their
propagation, cultivation, harvesting and uses. A booklet
detailing the herbs used will be given each guest.
Cuttings and potted culinary plants will be given each guest.
$100./person. Limited

Myra Bonhage-Hale, the
steward of La Paix will conduct this all day workshop. The
lavender is scheduled to be blooming here again and participants will
harvest their own fresh lavender to make various crafts which they can
take home. A tour of La Paix's gardens and woods with emphasis on
growing lavender successfully in West Virginia will be followed by a
demonstration by Chef Geof Kraus* (of Lavender Creme Brule fame) who
will cater the gourmet luncheon. The afternoon will concentrate on
making various crafts with the lavender collected. A distillation
of lavender will also be conducted.

Basic Herbs: Choosing What to Grow &
Where
to Grow It: Planning Your Herb Garden
10
a.m. to 4 p.m. with Complimentary Lunch: $55.
For those just
beginning to enjoy herbs and those who may already have outgrown their
gardens, this workshop will focus on planning your Herb Garden based on
the herbs you will use in the kitchen, for aroma and
for medicinal
purposes. Each participant will plan an herb garden after learning
about various herbs and their uses.
Complimentary Lunch will feature
herbs grown at La Paix.

Culinary Herbs Featuring Garlic, the Herb of the
Year
Propagation of Culinary Herbs, Cultivation and Uses
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Complimentary Lunch: $55. We will
take cuttings of thyme, Rosemary and mints, seed basil and
sage, learn how to plant garlic. Bring six containers filled with potting soil to take your
cuttings and seeded pots home with you. The Complimentary Lunch will
feature basil, dill, garlic, thyme, Rosemary, mints and more.

Paix's display gardens and woods and learn about the diversity of plants

conducted. The Complimentary Lunch will feature both herbs and wild
edibles grown at La Paix.

who wants to come to this special day to come. The Silver Labyrinth, the Feng Shui Garden,
lavender plantings and woods of La Paix will be featured in this day
dedicated to finding and keeping peace in your life. Learn how to
make a sanctuary in your garden. Walk the labyrinth, meditate in the
woods, learn how to listen to nature. Fundamentals of dowsing will
be described and practiced. The lunch will include herbal teas for
relieving stress and anxiety.

fragrance garden, a wonderful place to relax. At the end of
the day, a bath may be drawn and strewn with fragrant lavender, Rosemary,
Lemon Balm and other herbs. Bathing there, looking at the beauty
around you is delightfully peaceful. |
