Deborah Koons Garcia will be the
Keynote Speaker at the
W. V. Sustainable Fair
A writer, producer and
director, Ms. Garcia's film
"The Future of Food" is described below by Wikipedia the Free
Encyclopedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Future_of_Food"
The Future of
Food is a
2004
documentary film which makes an in-depth
investigation into unlabelled, patented,
genetically engineered foods that have quietly made
their way onto grocery store shelves in the
United States for the past decade.
It gives farmers in
disagreement with the food industry a voice to express
how their lives and livelihoods have been negatively
impacted by this new technology, and shines a light on
the market and political forces that are changing what
we eat.
The film decries the
cost of a globalized food industry on human lives around
the world, and highlights how international companies
are gradually driving farmers off the land in many
countries. Potential global dependence of the human race
on a limited number of global food corporations is
discussed, as is the increased risk of
ecological disasters (such as the
Irish Potato Famine (1845–1849)) resulting from the
reduction of
biological diversity due to the promotion of
corporate sponsored
monoculture farming.
The issue of
incorporating a
suicide gene into plant seeds is questioned, with
concern being expressed about the potential for a
widespread catastrophe affecting the food supply, should
such a gene contaminate other plants in the wild. Legal
stories reported by the film related how a number of
farmers in North America have been sued by
Monsanto; and the defendant of the
Monsanto Canada Inc. v. Schmeiser case is
interviewed.
The film was written
and directed by Deborah Koon Garcia, produced by Catherine
Butler and Deborah Koon Garcia, and premiered on
14 September
2005 at
Film Forum in
New York City to a full house. It has since been
released on DVD in both
NTSC and
PAL formats. The film will be available for
viewing at the Sustainable Fair.

About Public Outcry Presentation
Harper McNeely Auditorium Friday, April 18th, 8 p.m.:
Public Outcry is a
group of six Appalachian writers, songwriters, and musicians, all
hailing from Kentucky, and all united in a collective mission to
“educate people inside and outside their home state” about the
devastating effects of mountaintop removal mining (MTR). Public
Outcry blends song, reading, visual imagery, and dialogue to raise
awareness about this growing environmental problem.
Public Outcry is
The Cosmic Mamaws (Jessie Lynne Keltner, Kate Larken, Anne Shelby,
and George Ella Lyon) and The Doolittles (Jason Howard and Silas
House). Although as individuals, they are published authors (Silas
House, author of three best-selling novels and several prestigious
fiction awards, visited campus with great success last year), as a
group they have also become successful. They have played all over
the Appalachian region on college campuses, at community forums, and
in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort, Kentucky. Their music is
featured on the CD Songs for the
Mountaintop and in the book
Missing Mountains, a
collection of non-fiction about MTR. It is, in fact, this unique
blend of artistic genres, both grounded in the word, which promises
to expand interest in Writers’ Week, both amongst the student body
and within the local community.

"Street
Music for Sustainability"
John
Lozier
says, "Street music is not mere entertainment. It promotes
sociability. It can be a vital part of sustaining our downtown
communities. But musicians like everyone else must have a livelihood.
They cannot be expected to work without pay. Bureaucratic barriers are
not insurmountable. A greater problem is that the public is
unaccustomed
to tipping street performers. This is linked with the faulty notion
that street musicians are panhandlers. Musicians will respond if they
are made welcome. With a bit of effort, we can create a friendly
environment for street music.
